Black Friday (and Cyber Monday) 2024 wishlist

Here is my shortlist of stuff I expect to be discounted on the Black Friday, and that I'm looking forward to buy or think is worth buying. This year's Black Friday is on November 29th, which practically coincides with my (now destroyed) country's birthday (and is as close as it gets to my bd LOL :) ).

Software​

  • Plex.tv
    This is a software for turning your NAS (or PC) into a media server. With streaming platforms charging money while still showing adverts (Netflix and "Amazon Prime" to name a few), I think it's fair to just host stuff yourself (sharing is caring). They are still selling lifetime licences, and that's what I'd look to buy at a discount (highly likely).
  • HWiNFO®
    A free software for monitoring your computer hardware. I've used many different alternatives over the past decades, but this one is my first pick with all its pros and cons (compared to the pros and cons of the alternatives). The paid version removes the limit on the number of monitors to display, and paying for a lifetime licence is a way to support it - but I'd look for a discount on the lifetime licence, hopefully on Black Friday (not guaranteed).

Hardware​

  • AOC CU34G2XP, 34 Inch WQHD Curved Monitor, 180 Hz, FreeSync Premium (Amazon.de affiliate link)
    Looks like an ultra-wide monitor that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, while providing a good quality image for reading, writing, and video editing (and gaming, as its marketed primary use).
    I would highly prefer a 1080p ultrawide monitor (this one is 1440p ultrawide), but it seems like models with a high-quality image are no longer being made for that resolution.
That's it for now - I'll update this list if I come across some good offers.

Monitors are one of the largest frauds in this century (and the late stage capitalism). Apart from the slightly higher power consumption, the old thick ("box") CRT monitors performed a lot better than most modern monitors.

Decades ago, on mid and even low-priced (CRT) monitors, things like viewing angles, motion clarity, good contrast, and even colour accuracy were better than they are now on even the very expensive contemporary "thin" monitor models.

Sure, it's not all sun and roses with the old CRT-s, but the current monitor offers do still look like ridiculous semi-finished products.
The same goes for my "pick" in this thread (for one I expect poor or mediocre at best brightness and viewing angles).

I'm not sure about audio equipment, but I'd be surprised if the situation is any better.

And again, I have to disagree with you :LOL: I am a professional photographer in the past, and I have calibrated many monitors in my life. And I wouldn't want to go back to the CRT monitor.
The "oldest" monitor I have, for more than 10 years, is a Dell U2711. And according to my ColorMunki Photo, it has a 98% color coverage from AdobeRGB. sRGB covers with a large margin. That is, it is suitable for professional color correction without reservations (y)
There are also two very cheap monitors, ≈60€. Their color gamut almost completely corresponds to sRGB, that is, it is absolutely enough for domestic use ;)

Oh, you'd be surprised how strong Chinese hi-fi manufacturers are right now ;)

It's a 25% discount, making the "lifetime" licence cost $90.

Updating this with another monitor on my shortlist at this time:
  • LG UltraGear Gaming Monitor 34GN850P (Amazon.de affiliate link)
    Since most of my work is related to reading and writing, this IPS panel migh be better than the above-linked VA panel monitor. This one is also listed as "gaming" monitor and I'm certainly looking forward to experienceing how the higher refresh rate and FreeSync fare when playing a game.
  • BONTEC 13-42 Inch Monitor Wall Mount (Amazon.de affiliate link)
    This should work with my existing monitor too - looks like a good option to keep my workspace easy to clean and move the desk away when needed.
