Can I swap threaded 1 1/8" fork for a threadless one?

A question I got in the comment section of the video about headset cup dimensions:
Good stuff thanks! I am now wondering if it would be possible to change a bike with external bearing cups from 1 1/8 quill stem to 1 1/8 threadless stem by changing the bearing cups to suit? I guess if the headtube inner diameter is the same... it could work. If so, it would be a better option thatn using a quill-to-threadless stem converter.

Solution
You can easily find 1 1/8" external cups for the "threadless" ("ahead") system.

They will most likely fit the existing threaded fork (and head tube).

However:
The threaded fork may not protrude enough for a stem to fit properly.
If it does, and if it is made of steel, you could more-less safely mount an aluminium a-head stem and it could work (I've done it in the past without any problems).

Of course, ideally, you'd want to get a new, high-quality threadless fork, because the threads that are cut do weaken the fork to some degree. As I said, I have done it in the past without problems - and, an aluminium stem, being softer than steel, does hold well over the threads, without burring them or slipping.
