MXroute email and DNS setup - Q&A

I've made an article called "MXroute domain email solution", and a video where I've explained how to configure your DNS for MXroute hosted email service:

On YouTube, I got this question (I'll keep it anonymous to respect privacy):

Hi, thanks for this detailed tutorial and the write up. For the DKIM key set up, what was the reason to paste the txt from your mxroute account and then replacing it with the "online dns record viewer" that splits it into 2-3 parts? Also, is it better to add the SPF record from the mxroute tutorial link you showed vs the txt from the account that shows an IP address?

That is a good question, and answering it might help many other people with a similar problem - so, I've decided to post in the forum, because comments get lost on YouTube (YT offers a rather poor UI/UX for discussions and Q&A).

Great questions - thank you. :)

DKIM

The DKIM key setup using the online DNS record viewer was necessary for the MXroute service running on cPanel platform. The video shows the current, DirectAdmin flavoured one (cPanel vs DirectAdmin). Hence, there was no need for me to copy/paste the data from the online tool.

I could have just compared the data to confirm that it's the same, if I wanted to be really sure and double check everything - though in practice the DirectAdmin DKIM data has always been correct with MXroute. So, that was a mistake - I did the extra work needlessly, and perhaps confused more than one viewer - my bad. The upside is that the demonstrated method still gives you good results (one could argue it to be better for making the extra check / confirmation), but I missed to explain that in the video (and, again, I shouldn't have just copy/pasted instead of comparing the two records).

Thank you very much for pointing this out.

SPF

This question is also great, logical - and I asked MXroute support about it too.

They have confirmed that there is no need to configure the IP address, as MXroute uses other servers to send/relay emails. Adding the IP address won't cause any problems, but it's just a needless extra.

For my own further reference/reminder:
Ticket "#946852 SPF record change?"

Another benefit of such setup is that physical sending server and infrastructure changes and updates won't mess up the customers' setups - and I can confirm that to be the case in practice as I've been with MXroute since 2018.

Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and post the good quesions.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
