Sometimes, technicalities (fueled by nationalism) get in the way of common sense, and end up being implemented.

I've had problems making my WordPress websites show a Serbian (or Serbocroatian) html language tags while using the latin script (instead of the Cryillic). Fortunately, I've found a way to overcome that nonsense.
Trying to talks sense with the WordPress's translation/localization team was leading nowhere.
This solution will also help with SEO for people from Switzerland, Belgium, and other countries who use different languages within one state/country.

My solution:
How to change WordPress “html lang=” tag, without changing the frontend language

How to make site language tags make sense
