Selling socialism? A case study in clickbait ethics

I recently published an article on my blog that critiques how a Second Thought YouTube video was presented.

It was framed as a spontaneous "editing crisis" upload - a surprise treat for viewers. But what followed felt like a well-planned sales pitch: affiliate links, discount codes, platform promotion, all wrapped in a story that implied generosity and spontaneity.

The video promotes Means TV, a worker-owned, anti-capitalist platform - which I support in principle. My issue is with the disconnect between the message and the method. When leftist messaging borrows tricks from corporate marketing, it can feel like it's treating the audience as naive.

Here's the article:
Selling Socialism: A Case Study in Clickbait Ethics

What do you think?
  • Does the way something is presented matter as much as what it says?
  • Is this just a practical compromise, or a red flag (pun intended)?
