Hi,
I have a new 8 speed chain with a quick link, which I want to mount on a drivetrain. It is 117+1 quicklink. If I shorten it,is it important Where exactly to break and connect the chain, near the quicklink or anywhere else?

Hi,

I wuld remove the quick link and then remove the needed number of links on either side (it doesn't matter which).

Only when I need to lengthen a chain, I try to make sure that I don't use two quick links too close to each other (I like to have at least 5 links space between them - colour me superstitious :) ).

In case it helps, I've made a video about how to use different kinds of quick links and chain connectors:

Thanks,I managed to mount a new chain, but now it's skipping on some gears unlike older chain.IF I continue riding a new chain on an old freewheel and chainrings could it happen that it stretches quickly?I am considering to mounting an old chain again.Could it be that issue is due to using 8 speed chain on a 6 speed freewheel? Maybe I should look for a 6 speed specific chain?

This article explains it in detail, with photos:

Briefly put:
  • Worn rear chainrings will cause a new chain to skip (so you must replace the cassette too).
  • Worn front chainrings will cause chain suck (so you must replace the worn front chainrings or get new cranks - whichever is better option in terms of price, performance and other preferences).
8 speed chains work perfectly fine with 6-speed cassettes (though, for anyone else reading this, vice-versa doesn't, i.e. you can't run a 6-speed chain on an 8-speed cassette). See my chain compatibility article for more details.
