My post mortem analysis of the Insta360 X5 camera that I bought new and that broke within months of normal use (bicycle mounted mostly).

I have spent a lot of money to buy the camera, batteries, and mounts, and I have no high hopes of any refunds the way it seems to be going for now (will update this in case of any changes). I also don't prefer to get the camera replaced because the flaw is by design - so even a new camera will break pretty quickly if you use it for action.

This has been going on for many years now, to my amazement. I've seen many road bike Insta failures, same basic issue. At least since the X3. With YT and other social media for sale as marketing department tools, the issues are sorta glossed over. The folks using Insta action cameras for food prep clips or city walk vlogs will be fine tho, as far as the mounts go. Personally I use GoPro.

Thanks. Are you recording action videos and if so how is your experience with GoPro?

This is the refund refusal I got from the support - no refund:

Hi there,

Thank you for your patience and providing a follow up video explaining what happened.

After analysis by our engineering team, the issue appears to have been caused by bumpy road conditions, which led to the bottom screw hole of your X5 breaking when using the Bike Computer Mount Independent Handlebars (Pro). Based on this, the damage is considered user responsibility as it is against the usage notes (point number 4) when using the bike computer mount.

To assist further, could you please confirm which online or retail store you purchased the camera from? This will help us in guiding you with the refund request. However, based on the activation time of your camera (2026-02-28), it may already be past the return and refund window.

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to your reply.

My reply to the email:

Hi name-redacted-to-preserve-privacy,

I am very displeased with the product design flaw resulting in poor quality and no durability for use in action.
I am also very displeased by the company practically admitting that flaw and covering behind paperwork to not pay a refund.

You are not the kind of people I want to do business with.

Thanks. Are you recording action videos and if so how is your experience with GoPro?
Been great using GoPros since the Hero 3. Always great CS. They refuse to purchase 50-200 influencers to form and change views, so it is a difference in attitude. Years ago what DJI and Insta do daily would be illegal or immoral, imo. I use all brands at MotorSports events. Heck Insta even banned me from their Reddit page and DJI came close. Many folks just have their posts deleted, removed, get banned etc while they are dealing with DJ-Insta CS a form of pressure. GoPro does not have a Reddit page but is seen from time to time on r/gopro, as am i.

Thank you very much for this first-hand info. I will look into a GoPro as an option.

Having received another message from Insta360 staff, I wish to add this:

I have decades of experience with providing technical support and troubleshooting. I know very well that asking for specifics and details is necessary but also often frustrating for customers who are having a problem.

So, with this experience and knowledge in mind: from the very first contact with Insta360 staff regarding this breakage, I got the sense they are stalling and trying to grasp any technicality they could to decline any refunds. They were definitely not looking for specifics for troubleshooting, they were looking for catches to refuse warranty.

In other words: not for a moment did I get the impression that they will see how to make this right, even if it requires a bit of compromise on my end too - not just on their company's end. No. I got the feeling that they will try to gaslight me, ignore the issue and refuse any refund.

Turns out that impression (and gut feeling) was right. Insta360 refused refund, and also added insult to injury by blaming me for the problem. The offer for 50% discount on repairs is highly cynical for three reasons:

  1. They are well aware of Insta360 X5 design issue that makes it prone to break again and again.
This is implied by their small-letters-end-of-page catches about riding only slowly on nice roads in order to not have your warranty be void - for an action camera, yes!
  2. Hence, repair would have just "bought" another week or month of use before the breakage happens again (unless I baby the camera in my hands, instead of using it as an action camera).
  3. Their offer still requires me to pay more money to the company (or the repair company - but putting more money into this product nonetheless).
Based on the experience with the product and the treatment from Insta360 company, I no longer wish to give them any money nor do any business with them after this.

With all the MTB and motorbike advertising material and countless apparently paid influencers etc. it is clear that this company is misleading customers about their product.

For less than $1000, they have decided to do everything wrong. That's on them.

With a bit of luck and good health, I will save for another action camera - probably a GoPro, and see how that fares. Whatever I do, I try to not be like Insta360.

Dear customer,

Thank you for contacting Insta360.

This is [name-redacted-for-privacy], the manager from the Customer Experience Department. Your case has been assigned to me, and I am here to assist you.

We are genuinely sorry to learn what happened to your X5 camera, and we fully understand how disappointing this experience has been for you. Regrettably, we are not in a position to process a refund for your camera. The relevant return and exchange period has expired, and the damage occurred during usage of the bicycle handlebar mount. We would like to gently bring to your attention that usage guidelines are stated on the product page; this mount is designed for smooth flat roads and low-speed riding scenarios.

We acknowledge your observations regarding the mount structure. Nevertheless, vibrations from riding conditions beyond the accessory’s intended design limits may lead to component failure, which unfortunately falls outside the coverage for complimentary warranty service.

Although we cannot offer free repair or a refund, we hope you might consider our paid repair option. If you are open to moving forward with a paid repair, we are ready to further review and offer a competitive discount for you.

Please do not hesitate to share your thoughts with us.

Best regards,

My reply to that email - quoting:

Hi [name-redacted-for-privacy],

Thank you for the confirmation.

For clarity, I was indeed riding on bumpy gravel roads - I have no intention of pretending otherwise.

My concern is the fundamental disconnect in marketing an "action camera" bicycle mount that is structurally incapable of handling routine off-pavement vibration. Designing a bike accessory that fails on gravel, and restricting its intended use to smooth, flat roads in the fine print (instead of prominently in bold letters at the top), is poor engineering for an action brand. I also see that your camera is not designed for other sports that your site markets it for - high speed road motorbikes (with Marc Marquez no less).

From the very first contact I got the impression that you will not do things right - and you keep confirming it with every following reply.

Your company is very fraudulent, misleading.

I will decline the paid repair offer and document this limitation publicly so other cyclists know not to trust this mount beyond smooth tarmac.

It has cost me almost $1000 to learn what your company and its products are like, but I will not spend more money or time and energy on you.

Sincerely,
Relja Novovic

Well, after the last reply, here is further gaslighting from Insta360 - another email:

Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting Insta360. This is [name4-redacted-for-privacy], the manager from Insta360 Customer Experience Team. Your issue has been escalated to the highest management department, and we're planning to get your concern resolved soon.

My colleague has explained your situation to me and I understand that you feel upset for the loss of the camera. Please kindly know that the Bike Computer Mount is not recommended to use on bumpy roads which is clearly stated on the official website and instruction for use. It is restriction on the use of accessory instead of a product defect.

I understand that you are very disappointed for the solution provided. I humbly seek your understanding that normally we could not provide user with such high discount. It is a special plan we strived for you. Hope you can consider the 50% off to repair the device. Thank you for your kind understanding and support.

My reponse to this:

Hi [name4-redacted-for-privacy],

Based on my post-mortem analysis (and your fine-print-bottom-of-page policy) it is clear that Insta360 X5 is designed to inevitably fail from vibrations.

This makes any repairs pointless (50% or even 100% off) because the camera is obviously not suitable for action recording (using the provided Insta360 manufacturer mounts).

It is also fair to note that your marketing shows mountain bikes, fast motorcycles and other action usage, while at the same time your product page and user manuals do not clearly state that Bike Computer Mount is not recommended to use on bumpy roads. Small print at the very bottom is not what I would call "clearly state".

I fully understand that you are deflecting responsibility and using fine-print excuses to cover up a structural design flaw (which you dare not deny). You had every opportunity to make this right and do the right thing. How you chose to handle this speaks volumes about you, your company, and your products.

From the start, I was willing to work on a mutually beneficial solution, but at this point, I think that only a full refund for the camera (Starter Bundle) and all the accessories is a remotely acceptable solution - and if by any chance you happen to issue it (which has been highly doubtful from the first contact with your representatives) I will use the funds to buy a GoPro action camera with their factory mount and see if every action camera is as poorly designed as Insta360 X5.

Sincerely,

I have the feeling Insta360 might dislike what some out there are doing. All sorts of concerns and risk!! I guess the user would not only have things break even faster but could even owe Insta money haha

That selfie stick might provide some extra flex and cushioning and actually help - who knows. :)

You can also add even more weight to a long/heavy Insta and Insta mount..View attachment 809

I must check if the mount itself is steel or aluminium (in case of the latter, I would not expect it to be very strong).
For the camera: it would not connect directly to my wireless microhpone without connecting its base/transmitter, and I thought that would be heavy and impractical so thaknfully didn't even try that (probably would have broken sooner and perhaps even damaged the microhpone's base).
